Fishing From Shore on Catalina Island

Catalina Island does have great shore fishing and often deep water is found almost right up to the water’s edge. The main challenge is much of Catalina Island’s shoreline is only accessible by boat. If you have a boat available, pulling into one of the coves and fishing from shore can be great fun. Sheepshead, blue perch, calico bass, and even yellowtail are possible catches. Swimbaits work great for calico bass, halibut, and even sea bass. Heavier line is needed when fishing swim baits around the many rocky areas. Along with swimbaits, bait such as shrimp or squid is very effective for sheepshead, perch, and calico bass.

Fishing Catalina Pier

Catalina Island has one primary pier called Green Pleasure Pier. This pier has almost all rocky habitats surrounding it and as a result offers some of the best rocky species fishing in Southern California. Use squid strips, live smelt caught on the pier, shrimp, or swim baits all work well on different species. Very large gamefish are also possible such as yellowtail and even white sea bass, but usually blue perch and other perch species are most commonly caught.
